DNS (Domain Name System) serves as the backbone of the internet, allowing us to translate human-readable domain names into IP addresses that computers use to establish connections. Whether you own a website or manage internet services, understanding how to manage DNS records is crucial. In this article, we will focus on managing DNS records through the popular hosting control panel DirectAdmin.

Logging into DirectAdmin

The first step is to log in to your DirectAdmin account. Upon logging in, you will be redirected to the main panel where you can manage various aspects of your hosting account, including emails, files, and of course, DNS records.

Navigating to DNS Management

In the DirectAdmin main panel, locate the "Account Manager" section, under which you will find the option for "DNS Management." By clicking on this option, you will open the page for managing DNS records for your domain.

Adding and Editing DNS Records

On the DNS management page, you will see a list of existing records for your domain. Here, you can perform various operations such as adding new records, editing, or removing existing ones. The most common types of DNS records include:

  • A Records: Point to the IP address of the server where your website is hosted.
  • MX Records: Specify servers for receiving emails for your domain.
  • CNAME Records: Allow you to alias one domain to another.
  • TXT Records: Used for domain ownership verification or configuring email services.

When adding a new record, simply fill in the relevant information such as record type, host (subdomain name or @ for the main domain), address (IP address or target hostname for CNAME records), and TTL (Time To Live, determining how long other servers should remember the record).

Testing and Verifying Changes

After making changes to DNS records, it's essential to verify that all records are correctly configured. You can use various online DNS checking tools like MXToolbox or Google Admin Toolbox to verify that your changes have been successfully propagated.

Managing DNS records is crucial for the proper functioning of your internet services. DirectAdmin provides an intuitive interface for managing these records, making it easier to maintain your website and related services. By regularly checking and maintaining your DNS records, you ensure that your domain always correctly directs to your services, and emails reach their intended recipients.
