How Much Should Companies Invest in Their IT

The world is unreliable, and the same can be said about all electronics. As part of standard monitoring, we track all our servers and their functions. We monitor hundreds of services and thousands of hardware logs on each server every minute. If a serious issue is imminent, we know immediately and can act right away or, in less urgent situations, schedule maintenance, hardware replacement, or migration of the entire server.

In urgent situations, typically on a dedicated server of a client who did not want to be in the Cloud, we must act immediately to minimize data loss and service downtime. If possible, we resolve the issue, replace the hardware, and if the problem is extensive, we migrate the server to another one, usually without downtime or data loss. Any hardware issues are then addressed by DELL technicians under a paid 24/7 warranty. Throughout our company's existence, we have never had to restore an entire server from yesterday's backups. We have always resolved problems operationally.

Now to the core of the matter.

In very few cases do we have to shut down a server to perform repairs. Repairs have never taken more than 4 hours. At that point, we inform the client, or the client calls us to inquire about the problem. Usually, clients understand, and everything is resolved as quickly as possible.

Of course, there are clients who lack understanding and demand 100% availability for a service costing 25 CZK/month or have the cheapest VPS server option. Despite treating all clients equally and providing them with maximum care, a serious business requires a serious server.

Many companies do not realize that IT investment should be at least 10% of the company's profit. For example, if a client claims, and is not exaggerating, that they lose 100,000 CZK in missed profit for every hour of downtime, it means they should invest approximately 7 million CZK monthly in corporate infrastructure, servers, and IT personnel. A large business needs a robust solution. After deducting the costs for internal infrastructure, we can create a cluster or cloud for the client in this specific case that ensures 100% availability, assign two administrators, and everything can always be in order.

In our company's portfolio, we have clients who conduct very large international business, and if they took our advice, we created IT solutions for them with 100% availability each year, carefully monitored, secured, and backed up.

IT is like marketing; without an adequate budget, it cannot be done properly
