Dedicated Server for an E-commerce Site

E-commerce sites are as common as mushrooms after rain, but few know how to develop an e-commerce site to the point where it becomes profitable. Here, we’ll discuss clients who have a successful e-commerce site and are continuously expanding it.

The journey of having your own e-commerce site starts with a standard hosting plan for 25 CZK. After six months to a year, clients usually request an increased PHP memory limit, which we can then increase. If everything goes well, there comes a point when the client outgrows their hosting, and a move to a KVM VPS is necessary. Up until now, no e-commerce operator has been experienced enough to manage a VPS on their own. Thus, they transition from a 25 CZK/month plan to a service costing 630 CZK/month, which includes VPS server + management, backups, monitoring, and seamless migration of the e-commerce site from hosting to VPS. This way, the client doesn’t have to worry about anything other than selling products.

A VPS server is an excellent service. VPS server parameters can be scaled almost infinitely. During the Christmas season, you can increase RAM and CPU. If you have a lot of photos, you can expand the disk. For a small fee, you get an incredible amount of power.

So, why have an e-commerce site on a dedicated server?

A VPS server operates on a physical server along with other VPS servers. A dedicated server will only run your e-commerce site, achieving much higher stability and availability. Not to mention the performance. It’s similar to moving from an apartment building to your own house.

How much does it cost?

First and foremost, you need to consider: Do I really need my own server? In the vast majority of cases, the answer is NO. A VPS server is usually sufficient.

What about MyDreams VPS?

If a client really needs their own server, the following steps are taken:

  1. Purchase a server based on the client's business needs - Some need performance, others need space.
  2. Install the system, prepare the environment, set up monitoring, backups, etc.
  3. Test the server for 5-14 days under stress conditions. Especially for new servers, this helps map its performance and identify any faulty components. We have not encountered any faulty components in Dell servers. With other brands, we occasionally find issues with RAM modules or faulty power supplies. The server is new, and we handle complaints and retest as needed.
  4. Virtualize the server and seamlessly migrate the VPS from the old server to the new dedicated server.
  5. Scale and fine-tune the VPS server on the dedicated server.

How much does it actually cost?

  • Dedicated server - Typically 20,000 to 60,000 CZK. Servers costing over 300,000 CZK are not uncommon. Usually, clients recoup the cost of the dedicated server within 12-18 months. We prefer the more expensive Dell brand, which includes full service and component replacement within 24 hours.
  • Server housing - The cost depends on electricity consumption and server size, ranging from 1,100 to 2,500 CZK.
  • Full server management - 1,960 CZK/month.
  • Basic VPS server management - 500 to 700 CZK/month.

You might think that the cost of a dedicated server seems relatively high, but it’s essential to understand that for e-commerce sites with a turnover of one million CZK per month, this cost is negligible.
